Exploding Takata Airbag Recall

exploding airbags

The danger of defective Takata airbags has resulted in 14 different automakers issuing vehicle recalls for almost 70 million vehicles in the United States, and 100 million worldwide. The airbags, manufactured by the Japanese auto supplier Takata Corporation, can explode in an accident and send metal fragments flying through the vehicle. As of 2016, these defective airbags have caused 11 deaths in U.S. car accidents. Safety advocates are calling for all those affected by the Takata airbag recall to have their vehicle fixed immediately.

At Eisenberg, Rothweiler, Winkler, Eisenberg & Jeck, P.C., we handle a wide range of auto defect cases, including those involving defective airbags. If an exploding Takata airbag caused your injuries or the wrongful death a loved one, then an airbag injury attorney from our law firm can help you explore your legal options.

What are the Dangers of Takata Defective Airbags?

Recalled Takata airbags can inflict serious and sometimes fatal injuries due to a defect in the airbag inflator. The materials used in the manufacture of these inflators can sometimes degrade, a process which accelerates in heat and/or humidity. When this happens, the metal cartridge of the inflator weakens, often causing it to rupture during a car crash. If the igniter degrades enough, the airbags may go off without warning during even a minor fender bender. A rupture can also cause the inflator to ignite with too much force, resulting in an explosion. Additionally, the explosion may propel pieces of the broken metal inflator throughout the car.

Safety advocates are comparing the defective airbags to improvised explosive devices (IEDs) due to the extreme hazard of the metal shrapnel. Over 100 serious airbag injuries from shrapnel and at least 11 deaths have been attributed to these exploding Takata products. For this reason, it is important to take action if you receive notice that your car is subject to a vehicle recall for Takata airbags. The vehicle manufacturer should replace your defective airbags, free of charge. Additionally, due to the size of this recall, some vehicles have been given a higher priority. These include older cars as well as those kept in warm, humid states.

What is the History of the Takata Airbag Recall?

The first car crash involving defective Takata airbag injuries occurred in 2004. However, while National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) was notified of a potential defect in 2004 and again in 2007, no vehicle recall was issued and no further investigation was conducted. It was not until the summer of 2014 that automakers began to issue recalls for these defective airbags. At the end of 2014, the NHTSA advised car companies to recall vehicles affected by Takata airbags on a national scale. Since then, the Takata airbag recall has expanded to include 14 automakers and nearly 30 brands or cars, vans and trucks.

Whistleblowers from the Takata Corporation came forward in 2014, after the first vehicle recalls, to say Takata knew the extent and dangers of the defect in 2004. However, they intentionally hid test results from the public. When Honda notified Takata of the crash in 2004, it conducted safety tests on 50 airbags and discovered the defect. Rather than alert the public, the company ordered its lab technicians to delete the test records and say nothing. These tests occurred four full years before Takata publicly acknowledged the airbag defects.
