The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) continues to receive complaints from Ford Explorer owners who say they are being exposed to carbon monoxide. More than eighty of the complaints sent to NHTSA mention injuries. Due to these developments, the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) has once again called on Ford to issue a recall for 2011-2017 Ford Explorers.

Reports from across the country show that drivers are becoming ill or losing consciousness while driving these vehicles. Some Ford Explorer owners affected by the problem have talked to the press to share their stories. A North Carolina man who was poisoned by his Ford Explorer has even launched a website where other vehicle owners can share their carbon monoxide stories. The man was hospitalized after succumbing to carbon monoxide poisoning while driving his Ford Explorer.

CAS has also received complaints from Ford Explorer owners. According to the organization’s executive director, CAS has received reports of children losing consciousness and requiring emergency medical attention.

There have also been multiple reports of accidents involving Ford Explorers modified for law enforcement. In 2015, a Newport Beach police officer slammed into a tree after losing consciousness while driving. Last year, multiple officers with the Austin Police Department (APD) became nauseous and drowsy behind the wheel. One of the officers almost crashed into a bus. APD used carbon monoxide detectors in their interceptor vehicles to confirm the presence of the deadly gas. In Massachusetts, a police officer who crashed his vehicle tested positive for carbon monoxide poisoning.
