New Jeep Wrangler Is First Vehicle to Tip Over in IIHS Crash Test
The makers of the redesigned Jeep Wrangler are scrambling after the vehicle tipped over during a test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It’s the first vehicle to ever tip over in such a test, and disturbingly, the Wrangler tipped over twice.
The IIHS conducted the driver-side small overlap crash test as part of a random highway safety audit. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the parent company of Jeep, submitted its own test results showing the Wrangler did not tip over. (You can watch a video of the crash test for more information.)
Do Jeeps Tip-Over Easily?
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles further argued that the IIHS test was invalid because of how the testing rig was set up. IIHS safety officials agreed to another test that met FCA’s approval, but the Wrangler once again tipped over on its side.
The small overlap crash test involved the Wrangler colliding with a barrier on the driver’s side at about 40 mph with the outermost part of the Wrangler’s bumper. Crashes like these, while rare, are especially dangerous because all of the force of the impact is concentrated in a small area.
The Jeep Wrangler tipping over in the test is especially dangerous because passengers are much more likely to be partially or fully ejected in a rollover crash, leading to serious injury. The Wrangler is especially vulnerable because it’s a convertible and its doors are removable. The poor showing in the crash test led the IIHS to give the vehicle a “marginal” safety rating, the second-worst of its four possible rankings.
