A warning was recently issued by the FDA regarding the drug Fentora, a painkiller that is manufactured by Cephalon.
Cephalon Inc. reportedly sent doctors throughout the country a warning informing them that the medication has been linked to several deaths.
What is Fentora?
Fentora was approved by the FDA to be used by cancer patients to treat bursts of pain they may experience as a side effect of their illness.
Both Fentora and its predecessor, Actiq, contain fentanyl, which is an extremely addictive substance that is 80 times stronger than morphine.
Fentora is a faster-acting version of Actiq and Actiq has been associated with more than 120 deaths since its approval in 1999.
The Dangers of Fentanyl
The medication's strength and addictiveness puts it in the same category as cocaine and methamphetamine.
Fentanyl is also a main ingredient in the duragesic pain patch , which is also a medication that has been the subject of much debate in recent years.
Off-label Marketing of Drug Illegal
Physicians have been given permission to prescribe the drug at their own discretion.
However, the off-label marketing of the medication is illegal.
Regulators have also asked Cephalon to better educate patients and doctors on proper use of the medication.
