Avandia®
Avandia is a prescription drug used to treat Type 2 diabetes. It functions by increasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin. Avandia was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on May 25, 1999 and it has been prescribed to over 6 million people.
Clinical studies of Avandia indicate that the prescription medication may increase the risk of bone fractures, congestive heart failure, heart attacks and other adverse cardiovascular events. The results of 42 randomized clinical studies indicate that Avandia may raise the risk of adverse cardiovascular related events by 30 to 40 percent.
The symptoms associated with congestive heart failure as a result of Avandia include:
- Weight gain
- Swollen feet
- Shortness of breath
- Blurred vision
GlaxoSmithKline PLC, the manufacturer of Avandia, reportedly failed to warn patients of the potential risks of the prescription medication. In order for patients to be aware of the risks, the FDA has recommended that the manufacturer include a blackbox warning on the label of Avandia.
