Cerebral Palsy Surgery

Numerous cerebral palsy treatment options exist to help children with cerebral palsy lead normal lives. For instance, medications, physical therapy, occupational therapy, surgery, and other treatments often help mitigate some of the side effects and other problems caused by the condition.

Therapies and treatments are generally aimed at helping children with cerebral palsy develop certain abilities and skills, whereas cerebral palsy surgery typically seeks to improve side effects and various associated disabilities.

Types of Cerebral Palsy Surgery Procedures

  • Reconstructive surgery helps improve muscle balance in the arms, stabilize joints, and release muscle contractors. Reconstructive cerebral palsy surgery may also help improve motor skills and hand functioning, including pinching, grasping, and releasing.
  • Dorsal rhizotomy is a cerebral palsy surgery procedure that can alleviate spasticity and improve movements such as walking, standing, or sitting by cutting off certain nerves that deviate from the spinal cord.
  • Stereotactic surgery is a procedure performed on several areas of the brain that can help improve various effects of cerebral palsy including rigidity, athetosis, and tremor.
  • Baclofen pump implantation into the abdomen allows the constant administration of a cerebral palsy drug – baclofen – that helps minimize muscle spasticity in some people with cerebral palsy.
  • Other cerebral palsy surgeries may be performed to correct skeletal effects of the condition including scoliosis and hip dislocation. There are also tendon-lengthening procedures, such as tenotomy, that may help minimize serious muscle spasticity.

Your Legal Rights

The average lifetime expense of caring for a child with cerebral palsy is approximately $1 million, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). These costs include doctor and hospital visits, special education programs, treatments and therapies such as cerebral palsy surgery, and more.

If your child developed cerebral palsy that you believe was caused by a medical professional’s negligence or wrongdoing, you may be eligible to recover damages for your losses and suffering. A qualified medical malpractice attorney can protect your legal rights and help you and your family get the compensation you deserve.
